We were to follow a USCG icebreaker from BW 7 (Grondal) in Greenland out thru the ice which they thought that we could break. We could not. It was Alfred Palmer Ells CGM that went over the bow and secured the anchor chain to the breakaway section. We steamed slowly to Argtentia, Nfld where it was repaired. I remember sitting in the deck quarters wearing head phones and peering into the gaping hole which had been stuffed with mattresses. At this time LT L. H. Watson was commanding officer.
